Jayaram and Simran finally play the couple

Jayaram and Simran have shared a film before. Panchatanthiram, back in 2002, had them both in Kamal Haasan’s orbit without ever letting their tracks cross. It has taken 24 years for someone to cast them opposite each other, and the new film that did it made the point visually at its launch in Chennai: the two leads turned up in silk, draped in rose garlands, posed on a sofa like a couple fresh out of a wedding hall.

The film pairing them is a family rom-com from SY Gowthamraj, built on the collisions between three generations: Gen Z, the 2K kids and the lot who grew up in the 90s. How they live, what they want and how badly they misread each other is the engine of the screenplay, which promises comedy over conflict and a clean family watch.

The casting under the leads follows the generational math. Ponvel, the boy who carried the most wrenching stretches of Vaazhai, takes a key role, with Devika Sathish and Bhagavathi Perumal joining the ensemble.

K. Vijay Pandi’s White Carpet Films, the banner behind Dejavu and Viththaikaaran, produces with Shanjan G’s Redacted Studios, and Arya, fresh off playing a Tamil man inside a Malayalam story in Ananthan Kaadu, presents the film through The Show People. Until a title lands, the backdrop billed it simply as Production #04.

Deepak handles cinematography, Achu Rajamani composes, Arul E. Siddharth edits and Mahendran runs art direction. Karthik Netha writes the lyrics and Anusha Viswanathan choreographs, a department that tends to matter in a film sold on rom-com energy.

For Gowthamraj the register shift is the story within the story. Raatchasi sent Jyotika to war against a broken school system and Kazhuvethi Moorkkan dealt in caste and blood; a breezy multigenerational comedy is the softest canvas he has picked up as writer and director.

The pooja clapboard was dated 23 August, and the team says the title and the rest of the cast will be announced soon.
